GUESS WHAT, MUTT?

Guess what, mutt?
The girl is gone and left us again
Doggone dog, tomorrow's gonna be over by ten
We talked this over so many times and dog, you warned me I'm out of my mind
but confound, hound, this looks like the end of the line.

A man's best friend is a dog, that's true
but dog, I get tired of talking to you.
Guess what, mutt?
She did what you said you would do. *

Guess what, mutt?
She packed up her duds and moved out of the house
And doggone dog, she said you stink, and that I'm a louse.
Well someday we'll show her what true love means
I guess for breakfast, let's open some beans
Confound, hound, you and I are still a good team!

A man's best friend is a dog, that's true
but dog, I get tired of talking to you
Guess what, mutt?
She did what she said you would do. *

- Merle A. Stearns
sung by Rodd Keith, Hollywood Hitmakers LP 272: Rodd In Velvet

* Rodd first sings "she did what you said you would do".  Next time around he sings "she did what she said you would do."  I wouldn't be surprised if the line as written was "she did what YOU said SHE would do", and that Rodd might have fudged it both times. I know when I sing it to myself, I have to be very conscious of how I order the words, it's easy to mix them up, and I think that MIGHT be what happens on this one. Unless the song poet wrote the line in two different ways.  I know that if I covered it, I would change it to "she did what you said she would do", because I think that's the best of them, even though it doesn't appear in the song: the mutt TOLD him she was going to do this! "Guess what, Mutt? She did what you said she would do: she left me.  But hey....you and I are still good team!"   That, to me,  is the story told in this cool little song.
